I almost had to pinch myself when I checked the pond. It should be looking a bit devoid of life right now as everything is lying dormant in one life stage or another (egg, larva, adult in torpor). Not so this time.
It’s Winter. It’s not far from the end of the year. We’ve had frosts. So, how come there are still pond skaters on our pond?! Not just one hardy survivor that has battled against the odds to still be there. No, there were plenty of them. all skittering away on the surface. I’m sure they must be starving as there can’t be much in the way of small insects to fall onto the surface these days.
They are all very lively though, and seem to be in good health.
I don’t recall ever recording pond skaters in December before – another week and they’ll just about creep into January!
Surely, they are the only skaters around that are glad about the lack of ice at the moment.
