#305 Don’t be fooled by yet another sunny day..

It’s been another cracking day, with plenty of sunshine. Butterflies are still on the wing, the trees still gave plenty of leaves and people are still walking around in shorts.
Mark my words though, it won’t last much longer (sorry!). The signs are there if you look, and even listen – Winter IS on its way.

One of the clearest indicators is the sound of winter visiting birds arriving in their thousands right now. Pop outside for a few minutes when it’s dark tonight, and just listen..

It won’t be long before you’ll hear them. A series of high pitched calls in the dark skies. Generally described as a ‘tseep’ sound, they are the contact calls of Redwing. Members of the thrush family, they are arriving from their Scandinavian breeding grounds. They love berries, as well as windfall apples.  They will stay with us throughout the Winter and into Spring before they head back North again.

So, if you still don’t believe me that the seasons are changing, go out no have a listen tonight!

A Redwing. No, they don't have red wings - they have chestnut coloured underwings and flanks - the next best thing.
