It was beetle-mania at Dorset Wildlife Trust HQ today. At lunchtime, Jane mentioned that she had been checking out the beetles on the bank near the front door. Intrigued, I asked her to show me the beetles..
Nestled in and around the coarse grasses and the nettles were loads of them – oil beetles, out for a bit of sunbathing. Now, these are not just any old beetle.. They are huge! The biggest was probably about 30mm in length. They are not going to nip you or harm you in any way so if you do happen to find a colony of them, please just admire them and don’t harm them. Have a good look at their antennae – amazing structures!
