#31 Nice day for newts

I noticed that the garden pond needed a bit of attention recently, loads of dead leaves and some blanket algae had to come out before it warms up (assuming the sun will make an appearance one day!).  I set to work this morning with the net, hauling out leaves, twigs and algae – dumping it all on the edge of the pond to allow any critters to clamber back into the water.  There are LOADS of newts in the pond! Females already plump, males already in their best courtship refinery.  I put a couple of them in a container for a good look – to confirm they are Palmate newts. All are now safely back in the pond – although if it doesn’t stop raining soon, the pond will be what was once the back garden!;-)

One of the residents of the pond - wondering who the geezer with the camera is!
